Americans United for Life Response to Peterson Verdict
Press Release, November 12, 2004 – Today's conviction of Scott Peterson for the double homicide of both Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner, shows that fetal homicide laws make good sense to juries said Americans United for Life (AUL).
"This very public case shows that juries are certainly willing to convict those who kill unborn children," said Denise Burke, Senior Litigation Counsel at Americans United for Life. "Fetal homicide laws are important to the social fabric of our society. No one should get away with killing another human being just because they haven't been born yet."
Currently, 31 states protect unborn victims from violence including homicide. In addition, President Bush signed the Federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act on April 1, 2004.
"It is our hope that with this successful, high-profile conviction that other states who currently do not have this common sense protection for human life on their books will move to adopt such a law," concluded Daniel McConchie, Director of Public Relations and Public Policy of Americans United for Life.
