« Where's the Outrage? | Main | Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation »

Commentary: November 23, 2005

Blessings to you on Thanksgiving Day

This day before Thanksgiving I'm coming out of hibernation to share a great statement by Len Munsil, Director of the Center for Arizona Policy:

The whole point of this uniquely American holiday, as initiated by Congress, is directed at thanking our Creator. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a formal proclamation pursuant to an Act of Congress. After recognizing God’s gifts, the president wrote: “... I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States ... to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens ... [it is] announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord .... It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people.” I pray that our celebrations tomorrow, for the sake of equipping our children and grandchildren, will make thankfulness to God the centerpiece of the day. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks Len!
