Brief Note on Exaggeration and Stem Cell Research
Who should we believe about the potential medical benefits of embryonic stem-cell research: hundreds of Nobel Prize scientists at renowned medical institutions, or Laura Bush on a stage with several people in lab coats? (editorial) - actually it was only 48 Nobel Prize winners who signed the statement saying that they oppose the Bush administration's science policies, according to the AP/Post-Intelligencer (Crenson, AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 8/14). "Who should we believe" is a good question considering the exaggerations that continue to be published.
BUT, some of the researchers favoring stem cell research are now suggesting that embryonic stem cell research and its potential are being oversold. They want people, especially non-scientists, to refrain from making claims that cures for diseases resulting from embryonic stem cell research are just around the corner.
