Coffee, Caffeine and Diabetes

Previously coffee was found to reduce the risk of diabetes (click here). Now it seems that caffeine interferes with "diabetes control" by impairing the metabolism of carbohydrates (click here).

"It appears that diabetics who consume caffeine are likely having a harder time regulating their insulin and glucose levels than those who don't take caffeine."

"... those who were given caffeine had a 21 percent increase in their glucose level and insulin rose 48 percent."

In a Forbes article, Tomas de Paulis, a research assistant professor from the Vanderbilt Institute for Coffee Studies at Vanderbilt University, explained, "It is well known that caffeine has a detrimental effect on glucose tolerance."

"What is less known is that coffee also contains compounds with the opposite effect. It is not coffee but the caffeine that should be avoided by diabetes patients," he added.

So, while coffee contains compounds that are beneficial to reducing the risk of diabetes, it also contains compounds (e.g., caffeine) that are harmful to diabetics. I must comment that the study, which involved only 14 subjects and (apparently) no control, appears to me to be somewhat questionable although I'll wait for the August issue of Diabetes Care for final judgement.
