Coffee Reduces Diabetes Risk

Good news for coffee drinkers – you have a reduced risk of developing Type Two Diabetes . In a large study involving 6,974 men and 7,655 women researchers found that the incidence of Type Two Diabetes was significantly reduced in individuals who consumed coffee. In addition, the risk decreased with increased coffee consumption. From the Jama Website:

Previous studies have suggested an association between coffee consumption and a reduced risk of diabetes. Tuomilehto and colleagues conducted a prospective study of Finnish adults to further investigate this purported link. After adjusting for potential confounders including age, body mass index, physical activity, alcohol use, and smoking status, they found a significant inverse and graded association between daily coffee consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes during a mean follow-up of 12 years.

Coffee is healthy?Women who drank three to four cups of coffee per day had a 29 percent reduced risk of diabetes. Those who drank at least 10 cups a day had a 79 percent reduced risk. Men who drank three to four cups of coffee a day had a 27 percent lower risk while those who drank at least 10 cups a day had a 55 percent lower risk.

On related but different topics, coffee consumption was found to reduce the risk of developing Parkinson's Disease, to reduce the risk of developing Gallstone Disease and to have no influence on the development of coronary heart disease (in women).

How many cups do you drink per day?
