Controversy Continues Over Kerry's Military Record and 527s
President Bush has now agreed to join forces with Sen. John McCain to crack down on 527's, the "independent" political organizations that are generally responsible for negative polical ads [more]. In fact, Pres. Bush announced Thursday he will file a lawsuit in federal court asking the federal agency that regulates campaign advertising to crack down on negative ads by groups not affiliated with political parties [click here].

While this action appears, from press reports, to have been motivated by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, it is a well documented fact that liberal groups dominate 527 spending and attack ads [more]. "Of the roughly 50 million dollars that the top 15 individual donors have given to organizations promoting a political agenda, 49 million have gone to support Democrat issues (Source: opensecrets.org)" . Further, close relationships exist between liberal 527s and the Kerry Campaign [click here] and Sen. Kerry has taken responsibility for a negative "attack" ad featuring Sen. McCain [click here - note that this story has an amazing spin].
However, neither the Republicans or Democrats (at the present time) will be able to silence their critics who can speak from first hand experience and who are not politically motivated. For example, in an exclusive interview with Retired Rear Adm. William L. Schachte Jr. (an independent who has had no contact with the Bush Campaign):
"Kerry nicked himself with a M-79 [grenade launcher]," Schachte said in a telephone interview from his home in Charleston, S.C. He said, "Kerry requested a Purple Heart."Kerry's account from his book, Tour of Duy, is somewhat different [story]:
My M-16 jammed, and as I bent down in the boat to grab another gun, a stinging piece of heat socked into my arm and just seemed to burn like hell. By this time one of the sailors had started the engine and we ran by the beach, strafing it. Then it was quiet.Kerry recently told supporters in Minnesota, "I am absolutely telling you the God's honest truth about what happened and what took place over there." Nevertheless, independents continue to find anomalies in Sen. Kerry's representation of the past [story] and American POWs have disclosed how Kerry's public statements were used against them [story].
So where does all of this leave us? Why the emphasis on military records? Character does count. Controversy exists because of the character of our leaders. And the character of our leaders reflects the character of those whom they lead. Therefore, love God with your whole heart, work for change on the local level, vote your conscience and trust God.
When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, people groan. - Prov. 29:2.
