Court Rules Atheism Qualifies as a Religion
The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last Friday that Wisconsin prison officials violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment when they refused to allow an inmate to hold a study group for atheists.
"Atheism is [the inmate's] religion," the court said, "and the group that he wanted to start was religious in nature even though it expressly rejects a belief in a supreme being."
Atheism, as a faith-based belief system, certainly qualifies as a religion. This is a fact that is often missed by secularists and those who accept their assumption that government can be devoid of religion.
This freedom of religion case is ironic considering the systematic suppression of Christianity in public forums by atheists via judicial decree.
