Debate on Stem Cell Research

One of my disappointments in the debate was the answer each candidate, and particularly Bush, gave on the topic of embryonic stem cell research (ESCR). While there is no surprise over my stark disagreement with Kerry, I found Bush walking a political line, attempting to appear supportive (first president to fund ESCR) but at the same time holding to a pro-life stand (ESCR destroys life).

It is for this reason that I agree with Josh Claybourn in his recent statement: Let us take a moment to resolve a glaring fact that seems to have missed most of the public, and indeed most in the media. No presidential candidate is for banning stem cell research of any kind. Period.

Yes, I was disappointed in him as well.

Bush's point with saying he was the first president to allow it was to show that he's not banned it. He has no problem with the research if the embryo isn't a live, since there's nothing against the pro-life position if the thing isn't alive. It's killing it to do the research that pro-life people should have a problem with. Kerry showed his misunderstanding of the pro-life view when he said that these embryos will either be killed anyway or kept frozen. The pro-life position is that they should be implanted if created at all and still viable. I thought Bush's response on that question was absolutely damning to Kerry.

I agree with your last statement but still see a duplicity in Bush's _presentation_ of being the first president to provide federal funding for ESCR and yet opposing ESCR. Thanks for the excellent comment.
