The death toll continues to rise as rescue workers rush to help those in need. The devastation of this quake is terrible. It is hard to imagine what would have happened if the epicenter had been on land.

The earthquake that has shaken southern Asia was one of the most powerful since the start of the 20th century, the U.S. Geological Survey says. "We've just updated it to 8.9 magnitude. That makes it the fifth largest earthquake since 1900," said Julie Martinez, geophysicist for the U.S. Geological Survey's Earthquake Hazards Program in Golden, Colorado.
