Ex-FBI Official, Felt, Claims to be Watergate's 'Deep Throat'
According to Vanity Fair, a former FBI official claims he was "Deep Throat," the anonymous source who leaked secrets about President Nixon's Watergate coverup to The Washington Post.
W. Mark Felt, 91, who was second-in-command at the FBI in the early 1970s, kept the secret even from his family until 2002, when he confided to a friend that he had been Post reporter Bob Woodward's source, the magazine said. One of the interesting elements of the breaking news is that Felt's daughter attempted to get Woodward to participate in a joint announcment, talking to the Watergate reporter more than a half dozen times."I'm the guy they used to call Deep Throat," he told lawyer John D. O'Connor, the author of the Vanity Fair article, the magazine said in a news release.
But Woodward would often begin those conversations with a caveat, the magazine said, saying, "Just because I'm talking to you, I'm not admitting that he is who you think he is." moreAccording to this article, Woodward was concerned about Felt's mental state, in talks and a visit with him, and ultimately, he did not go along with a joint exposure plan.
