Faith without Deeds in the Politics of Abortion

Lisa Fabrizio writes an excellent editorial about John Kerry's belief in faith and works.

[John Kerry stated,] "First of all, I cannot tell you how deeply I respect the belief about life and when it begins. I'm a Catholic, raised a Catholic. I was an altar boy. Religion has been a huge part of my life. It helped lead me through a war, leads me today. But I can't take what is an article of faith for me and legislate it for someone who doesn't share that article of faith, whether they be agnostic, atheist, Jew, Protestant, whatever. I can't do that."

Because he has said he personally opposes abortion, this is a cowardly position. Sad would be the state of our country today had Kerry's predecessors said, "While I am personally opposed to slavery, racism and sexism I cannot force my personal view on the rest of society." Shouldn't an "article of faith" be ingrained into one's conscience thereby informing all his works? [more]

This criticism of Kerry is well placed. He continues to emphasize the necessity of converting his "faith" into deeds in all that he does while publicly supporting the politically expedient position. Yesterday, while quoting from the Book of James, he said, "When I look around me -- open your eyes -- I see work to be done; I see deeds. For all the talk, for all the professions of faith and how strong we are, we've got a lot more lovin' of our neighbor to do in the United States of America." Perhaps Christians would find this somewhat palatable if this radically pro-abortion Senator had not also stated, "I oppose abortion, personally. I don't like abortion. I believe life does begin at conception... I can't take my Catholic belief, my article of faith, and legislate it on a Protestant or a Jew or an atheist."
