Finding Courage in Rathergate

Pittsburgh Tribune Review quotes Marvin Kalb, a former CBS and NBC news correspondent, regarding Dan Rather's criticism of those who exposed CBS's use of forged memos.

"Television must deal with political pressures to conform to resurgent conservative values that appear to be stifling editorial courage in the newsroom. (Dan) Rather had the inner strength recently to criticize 'these partisan, political ideological challenges.' Will his successor have similar courage? Will the timid network executives have the old-fashioned backbone to take on a crusading administration? I doubt it."
Considering Rather stood behind a story that was constructed on the basis of fake memos, Kalb's use of the word "courage" seems misplaced.
