Hostitcheap Review

Hostitcheap.com caught my attention through their marketed $5/month hosting service, 500 MB disk space, unlimited email, 10 GB/month transfer, subdomains, unlimited SQL databases, Cpanel, web mail access, and great scripts. It was easy to sign-up (no registration fees), install MovableType and get up and running. During the first few months service was great and I had no problems at all. When problems were experienced Hostitcheap sent notices that detailed the cause and solution.

Later, my site went down for many hours and the reply from my support desk inquiry was, "Your site appears to be coming up fine." That is, by the time the technician looked into it my site was back online.

More recently, I experienced several problems culminating in the SQL server being down for more than 24 hours. The first time my service call was answered and an explanation was given. However, I never received any response from my next two requests for support. In fact, my tickets were deleted without any indication that they have been received. This was very frustrating and unacceptable for any website.

Perhaps this negative experience can be expected for the low price of shared service. However, it prompted me to move-on and I presently use www.p4host.com - so far without incident or complaint.

Update: August 24, 2004

Since this entry gets alot of traffic I thought I would add the following. Browsing my referer logs I found hostitcheap (again) spamming me under the name "http://www.catagoryhound.com". Perhaps your google search led you to this page because you've had a similar experience?

I was with Hostitcheap.com for a while, and the last few months, the service became so bad it wasn't even worth the $5.

I got an email on 7/16 that they were having trouble with their merchant account and couldn't process CC payments for that month, and instructed to use paypal, which I did on 7/19. That same day, they went ahead and charged my card. I asked for a refund, they just say it will be used to pay the next bill ...

After a week of downtime, I cancelled my account. What do they do next ? Bill me for the next month, and use the credit on my account to pay that bill instead of issuing a refund. They say it was "prepaid" for the next month ... can you spell FRAUD ?

HostItCHeap.com is nothing but FRAUD, stay away from this "provider". It has no identity, it works with eNom like companies to push their ad frames into your domain redirect script. It is FRAUD!

Exactly the same thing happened to me. Also, during the week of downtime their mail servers were down and I was getting bounce back messages as if my domain no longer existed. They also playd the trick when I tried to log a support ticket of simply deleting it without any explanation. I honestly am shocked they are still in business.
