Ladder of Inference
I recently was emailed this helpful model for explaining failures in human communication:
- In the real world:
- Observable data and experiences that I see and hear
- I select Data from what I observe
- I add Meanings (cultural and personal.)
- I make Assumptions based on the meanings I added
- I draw Conclusions.
- I adopt Beliefs about the world (which affect what data I select in step 2 next time.)
- I take Actions based on my beliefs.
Then, inside my head:
Then, in the real world again:
The model helps us undertand that the "objective propositions" that we put forth are actually much more subjective than we realize. It is important to understand the standard of interpretation each person applies to observations and data prior to their conclusions. The system originates in the Fifth Discipline.
