Lasting Peace in Sudan Requires Accountability

The imminent peace accord between the Islamic Government of Sudan and the SPLM lacks several fundamental components. Notably, accountability for the atrocities committed against civilians in the South, including slavery, is not part of the deal [more from Passion of the Present]. Further, the composition of the GOS government will involve the same parties who are responsible for genocide in Dafur.

"The peace agreement is an important step, but lasting peace in Sudan will require genuine security for civilians and justice for the atrocities committed both in Darfur and southern Sudan," said Peter Takirambudde, executive director of Human Rights Watch's Africa division. "Even as the Naivasha agreement is being celebrated in the South, people are being raped and burned out of their homes in Darfur. The Security Council must clearly send Sudan the message that there will be no impunity for crimes of this magnitude."

I concur. A few passages from the Bible come to mind, including Isa. 59. However, I chose to quote the following:

God takes His stand in His own congregation; He judges in the midst of the rulers. 2 How long will you judge unjustly And show partiality to the wicked? Selah. 3 Vindicate the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and needy; Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked. . - Psalm 82
