Peace in Sudan?

After signing a peace agreement reports continue to indicate that the north Sudanese government has not stopped fighting.

So, despite the signing of a ceasefire agreement on April 8, fighting goes on. "We are still fighting factions of the rebels," a senior Sudanese military source told Reuters Arab news service Thursday. "The fighting is continuing. We have to destroy them. These are our orders."

Another article reports

The United Nations Security Council met on Friday in private session and heard a report from the UN Commissioner for Human Rights documenting a "scorched earth policy" and "repeated crimes against humanity" by Sudanese militia and troops in Darfur, western Sudan. But they failed to take any collective action other than pledging to "monitor developments."

Note that the Sudanese government was recently given a position as a U.N. watchdog (Sudan Debacle) despite its connection to slavery. The U.N. report documents that the north Sudanese government is using ethnically motivated militias and has targeted civilians belonging to ethnicities perceived to be members or supports of the rebel groups. Antov military planes have been used to bomb civilian targets and widespread rape has been reported.

What kind of peace can we expect in Sudan?
