Peterson Found Guilty of Murdering Wife and Son
Scott Peterson was found guilty today of murdering his wife, Laci, and the couple's unborn child. [sfgate, CNN]. I'm grateful that this jury has taken a stand for justice and for life by convicting Peterson of both murders. My prayers are for Connor and Laci's family, may they find closure and healing amid grief.
Commentary
Like many others, I followed the case because Peterson was charged with the homicide of his unborn son in addition to the murder of his wife. We were repulsed by the crime and are relieved by the verdict. Justice has been served and Peterson will now bear the consequences of his hideous actions. Yes, justice has been served.
Yet, the case boldly proclaims that there is injustice in our land. Daily, there is another crime, just as repulsive, just as despicable that is accepted, even promoted. The same government and the same people who avenged the death of Conner Peterson protect the murder of children up to the point of birth.
Very few, if any, supporters of abortion will dare decry the verdict as injust. Conner Peterson was a child who was murdered and yet U.S. doctors kill children, just like him, every day.
How can a dichotomy like this exist?
One reason is that the humanity of the individual (some use the term “personhood”) has become tied to the value placed upon him or her by society. A child who is wanted is protected. A child that is not wanted is not valued and can be legally terminated. The life giving decision, and the humanity of the unborn, is the mother’s “choice.”
In the Peterson case we recognized the value of the unborn and the truth of the command against murder. It is time to recognize that all men and woman, children and adults, born and unborn have an inalienable right to life that is worth protecting.
