Single Issue Politics and Abortion
Single "issues" can disqualify individuals from a variety of roles within society. Infidelity is looked upon as a disqualification for marriage and dishonesity is a black mark against individuals applying for a job. These "issues" are related to the character of the individual and call into question an individuals suitability for a given role. In fact, just believing that infidelity or dishonesty are acceptable is enough to disqualifty a candidate from marriage or a business position.
John Piper has written an excellent statement on abortion in politics that follows this line of reasoning. He states, "What do you think disqualifies a person from holding public office? I believe that the endorsement of the right to kill unborn children disqualifies a person from any position of public office. It's simply the same as saying that the endorsement of racism, fraud, or bribery would disqualify him-except that child-killing is more serious than those."
He later notes the laws protecting animals from harm and responds,
Interestingly, Sen. John Kerry is also a single issue politician, requiring that his running mate agree to uphold abortion rights.
