The Miracle of Life
Photo: A baby the size of a mobile phone. The child, named Ruby Angel Dunn, was born at 25 weeks and weighed a mere 12.5 ounces at birth:
Weighing less than a 1lb at birth, doctors warned her parents Kerry and Craig that she may not survive.Mrs Dunn developed pre-eclampsia, a potentially fatal condition for mother and child, which led to the premature delivery. Despite a pessimistic outlook, Ruby has thrived. Her mother comments:And even if Ruby did pull through, the couple were told to prepare for their daughter developing sight or brain problems.
Four months on, the baby girl has defied the odds and astounded medics with her progress.
Tests this week at Southmead Hospital in Bristol where she was born show that Ruby is in perfect health.
"For weeks we did not know if she would make it through. I had to wait eight weeks before I could hold her - that first cuddle was amazing."The article notes that the smallest baby to be born in the UK was Marian Chapman, who was born in South Shields, Tyne and Wear in 1938 weighing 10oz. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the smallest baby ever as a 9.8oz girl born in Illinois in 1989.
Yes, technology reveals the wonder of the unborn, the miracle of life and the tragedy of abortion.
