The Religious Heritage of the Inauguration
From today's New York Times:
President Bush, who starts each day with prayer and Bible reading, will invoke divine blessings on the nation in his second inaugural address like every president before him. What makes his swearing-in different, however, is the enthusiasm of his Christian conservative supporters for his inaugural expressions of faith. What makes the swearing-in different is not just the response of Bush supporters. The religious elements of the inauguration are actually meaningful to Bush. He takes them seriously and sees purpose in them beyond ceremonial dressing.
Bush, like many Presidents before him, claims to take seriously the truth that his authority as President is derived, through the people, from God. In doing so, he is not establishing what critics call a church-state, but is recognizing the ultimacy of God over the affairs of man and the necessity of government to be accountable for its actions.
