White Smoke and Bells
... means a new Pope was elected. Still no word who got the nod. Updated:
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the strict defender of Catholic orthodoxy for the past 23 years, was elected Pope on Tuesday despite a widespread assumption he was too old and divisive to win election. He chose the name Pope Benedict XVI and called himself "a simple, humble worker."
He took the name Benedict XVI, a cardinal announced to crowds in St. Peter's Square after white smoke from the Vatican's Sistine Chapel chimney and the pealing of bells from St. Peter's Basilica announced that a new pope had been chosen.
Updates from around the web:
WorldMagBlog's Paul McCain:
One thing we can with confidence about Joseph Ratzinger is that you never have to wonder where he stands on the issues he believes are important. His pre-conclave exhortation was nothing short of remarkable by Vatican standards for its candor and blunt assessment of the dangers of relativism. I've always been impressed by his commitment to the historic catholic faith that Lutherans share in common with the Roman Church. I've also always been impressed by the clarity of his theological positions and his refusal to compromise for the sake of any relativistic agendas. There was much in it I completely affirm. [Read the Reuters' article that follows these comments]. By the way, in that Reuters' article they report that "Lutherans" were "shocked" when Ratzinger declared them and Protestant groups to be "deficient." Of course we are, in the eyes of Rome!WorldNetDaily reports the following:
German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, 78, is the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He will take the name Pope Benedict XVI.
Ratzinger, the Vatican's chief overseer of doctrine since 1981 and a close aide to Pope John Paul II, becomes the first German pope since the 11th century. He is the oldest cardinal to be named pope since Clement XII, also 78 when elected in 1730.
The name Benedict comes from the Latin word for "blessing."
